Konkan Tour, 2012 - Sindhudurg, Malvan, Scuba Diving and More

Hey Everyone, Wish you all a very Happy New Year, 2013. May this year bring in loads of health, wealth and prosperity.

2012 was indeed a very successful year. With multiple opportunities, initiatives, transitions, fears, excitements, challenges etc I think it was a complete one and towards the end it deserved a grand celebration.

Although the trip to Konkan was planned for the November and was confirmed as well, I could not catch up as there were certain cultural commitments to attend. Nonetheless, the decision of transferring the trip to December was a pleasant one as the weather changed significantly over a month. They said in their blogs, that the trip is one of its kind, with scuba diving, snorkeling, water sports, sight seeing, etc etc. I wished the trip was indeed a good one. Couldn't afford to sabotage the end of the year / Christmas vacations like this.

Friday 21st December, 2012 was the day when it all began (stupid Mayans thought this day it would all end.. LOL). I started off early morning to office and carried all the luggage required for the trip. The bus was supposed to arrive at 11.15 PM at Vashi to pick us up. The day seemed longer than ever (not because that I was waiting for the meteorites, but because the most awaited trip of the year was about to happen). That day, it happened such that when you least expect someone, the person is standing in front of you. You expect not to work and you have to work the most. A client came in and we had to entertain his whims and fancies all day long. Finally, starving and tired we started at 11PM from office towards Vashi and reached on time. We quickly grabbed a couple of omlettes and bread from a vendor on the bus station. The bus arrived at 11.20PM and the journey began...

[The Bus] [Preface] - While waiting for the bus at Vashi depot, I & Vidya were discussing how the bus would be like. Vidya felt the bus to be as bad as a State Transport bus, however, I was of the assumption that it would be a Semi-Luxury 2x2 sleeper bus because the journey was long enough to travel. To spot the bus, Manoj (tour organizer) had asked us to hunt down buses with the name prints of 'Gadre' (which we misunderstood for 'Garde'). Now the name had history associated to it, which a few know. As we knew the name we concluded that the bus would be a bummer and it turned out to be one.

Of all the faces on the bus, it was just Vivek and Priyanka that I was aware of. The last stop was Kalamboli for the people coming in from Pune. As it was at tiring day, I planned to sleep off immediately, however, it was unexpected that Manoj would chip in and start introducing each and every one to each other, once all assembled. Within a minute we realized that there were 28 people onboard from different parts of the world.

Before anything else I would like to praise, commend and appreciate Manoj Kalwar our Tour Organizer. He had immense patience throughout, his execution was perfect, his camaraderie, his care for the group, his unbiased view and his push to the entire group in doing things was incomparable. A true gentleman. Kudos to him again and again. I would say he made the trip complete.

A very stereotypical way to break the ice in a group, 'Antakshari', begun out of nowhere. The entire bus was divided in two halves and both halves started singing songs and a competition struck. For an hour or so we all kept singing until all were bored and now a bit comfortable with each other. The next game 'Dumsheras' followed with amazing participation. Almost everyone participated and it was incredible fun. Movies like Yalgaar, Matru ki Bijli ka Mandola, Sangharsh, Oonsh and the most funniest and memorable of the lot 'AAAH' were to be guessed. We took a tea/coffee break in an hour, fortunately/unfortunately the motel we stopped didnt serve tea at 2AM, hence everyone resorted to soup, soft drinks, etc. I met Shehzad Ansari and we could connect easily as he  too is a part of Directi (which even Manoj was sometime back). We got back into the bus after an hour or so and all were pretty sleepy by then.

poha

Saturday 22nd December, 2012 -  We woke up at 8 AM and found ourselves at a plush Hotel around Ratnagiri. We stalled there for breakfast. Had some amazing Poha, Upma, Idli and Meduwada, followed by tea/coffee. The breakfast was refreshing, post which we assembled for the formal introduction part. All of them formed a circle and discussed individual whereabouts. There I realized that there were more singles than groups of friends in our tour.

Once again we started in the bus towards our destination - Malvan. Manoj introduced us to the game 'Mafia'. Plague of a game. We played this one till the end. The game has got it all - fun, complexity, challenges, personality portrayal, politics, debates, brain twisting etc etc etc. The game continued till the time we reached our destination at 2PM. Darya Sarang Resort - Chivala Beach.

All of them were sick of traveling and wanted to rest their selves, but had only an hour to do so. We immediately rushed back in an hour for lunch. People craving for some real Malvan food were presented with varieties like sol kadi, variety of fishes, Malvan chicken curry and of course the vegetarian course too had a hint of Malvani in it. In short the food was lovely.

The journey actually began now. The itinerary was as under in chronology:

1. Sindhudurg Fort Sight Seeing (day 1)- I would call it as 'The fort without cows'.
2. Rock Garden (day 1)- Garden without rocks
3. Bamboo Restaurant (day 1) - Dinner worth a mention
4. Scuba Diving, Snorkeling (day 2) - Lifetime experience

8. Water Sports (Tsunami Island), Lunch (day 3) - Too much fun
9. Tarkarli Beach (day 3) - Paragliding
10. Last night at Malvan (day 3) - Played Mafia

13. Back to Mumbai
14. Memories of a lifetime.
Ferry to Sindhudurg
Sindhudurg was our first destination. We reached the fort on a ferry as its based on an island. They say, that at the time when Shivaji Maharaj ruled, the soldiers used to march down the fort during low tide times. The fort was a deserted place. The guide was quickly explaining each and every aspect of the fort. I liked the way Shivaji built the fort in order to avoid attacks, the main door, the walls, the hidden exits, the Temple within etc each and everything in the fort had a purpose. The unique aspect lied in the Shivaji Temple within the fort, which is the only one in the world.

Sindhudurg Fort (lat. view)
The guide said, that during monsoons (even today) the people on fort need to stock their food, water, medicines etc in order to survive as its difficult for them to go back to shore. The strange part was, he was concerned that there was no milk during such a period. So I was wondering, why dint they  ferry cows to the fort, their problem would have solved. I have a mission to educate them on this one next time I visit the fort :)

We reached the shore back at around 7 PM. The skies were magnificent, never seen such a colorful end of the day. We walked to a garden nearby called 'Rock Garden'. It was dark by the time we reached. Wasn't sure if there were rocks if any, however there was a huge ground on which we circled and sat playing different group games. The games were hosted by Manish and Nitesh both of them had bags filled with various group games. They kept us entertained throughout. Manoj gave us the heads up for the next day and it was indeed the most awaited day. The day of scuba-diving.

We had dinner on our way back in a restaurant called Bamboo which is a re-knowned one out there. It was fun.

Exhausted we returned to our resort and dozed off in a jiffy.

Sunday, 23rd December 2012 - Manoj the restless woke us up at 7 early morning and asked us to assemble to catch the bus. We just had a cup of tea/coffee to commence the most eventful day of our lives so far. We started at 9 and reached the shore at around 9.30 AM. The ferry was ready to ship us to the spot where Scuba-Diving was to be done. We had our breakfast on the ferry and were excited to reach at the spot which was located right behind the Sindhudurg fort. Within 20mins or so we reached.
The assist divers started giving the introductions to people around as to what is going to happen and what not. However, Lawrence was one impatient fellow. He jumped into the water immediately. Yeah, he knew how to swim and was having a blast there. Nitesh jumped in first for Scuba diving from our group along with Manish and the list continued. There was another ferry which came in in order to accommodate the number of people in group. I moved into that ferry. My number came in pretty late.

Initially the diver gave me the mouthpiece to try and it was pretty fun doing it on the boat. While exhaling the piece made a funny noise which was OK with me. Few minutes passed and he called me in water. I was all decked up for the big event. I wore the gear provided by them and was of the assumption that more than 20 people have already finished this task, it should be a cake walk. The diver asked me to jump in and inhale/exhale using your mouth. I pushed myself down to see nothing but greenish blue and within 5 secs pushed up gasping for air. Flabbergasted. He gave me some quick instructions and asked me to go down again. This time I could standby for nothing more than 10 secs. I saw a huge fish (not a shark though) below the boat and came back. I was in doubt whether I could do it. The diver again gave some instructions which I already knew and asked me to be brave enough. I went in for the third time and saw a huge bunch of fishes there. I learned how to breath the third time, hooked to the boat, I was  enjoying watching fishes and the diver pulled me up. They are so rigid that we have to follow exactly what they say. He strapped me to a tube and dragged me approximately 10 feet away from the boat.

Again, gave me strict instructions for the last time and removed the tube taking me within. WATERWORLD. You see fishes, corals, hydra-plants, and the diver :( He took me from one destination to the other asking me to touch hundreds of things underwater. Wondering what would gay divers do down there, full in control of the situation.

He asked me to wait holding  one huge coral. He pulled out his camera and started clicking pics, I managed to give some poses down there, and wondered how funny they were. I believe he conned me, of all the poses I posed, I saw a few only in set we received. I was dragged deeper into water and then eventually pulled out. There was a minor pain in my forehead due to the depth but the experience was immensely memorable. Wished that he could take me once again down into the water. But there's always a next time. Not to forget, while in water, I picked up a shell which was lying there. It is a huge one. A small memento to keep for myself.

Snorkeling followed Scuba Diving. Its like a 3 min trailer of a 3 hour film. The guy strolled us through the area showing us fishes underneath. It was an average experience considering the amazements of scuba diving.
When all was done, we sat in the boat mesmerizing the experience and sharing it with peers.

We came back to our resort and had some real good konkani/malvani lunch. We got an hour to rest before we started for Konkeshwar Temple and beach.
The temple was pretty far away (approximately 50kms) we all played Mafia on our way and slept too for a while. We reached there approximately at 5.30PM, had a quick visit and made our way to the beach. The sunset was obvious and so were some games by Manish and Nitesh. We played oddly for an hour and returned for dinner. On our way back we had fabulous gaming sessions.

Post dinner, the night was spent playing mafia and chatting with folks around. When the clock struck midnight, Manoj was ready with a celebration. We assembled to celebrate Seema's Birthday. It was such a surprise for Seema, however the cake was addressed to Sheetal {bhavnao ko samjho}

Monday, 24th December 2012 - It was informed that in order to see the dolphins we had to get ready at 6AM and try to get at the spot ASAP. I woke up and started waking up people to get ready for the show. However, it started at 8AM. We went to the beach from where we got a ferry. Again we had breakfast on the ferry. As I had woke up by 5.30 AM I slept for approx 45 mins on our way to the spot where dolphins appeared.
We just saw few backs of approximately 8-10 different dolphins. As they were not trained, they never jumped as per the way they showed in the posters where it all started. It was a bummer. Seeing backs of dolphins made me feel like laughing out as loud as possible, because I know there were many onboard feeling the same. Felt foolish. Nonetheless, in the end Dolphins jumped but not here.

From the Dolphin Spot we moved towards Nivati Rocks and Nivati Beach, but unluckily we couldn't reach there as there was another family on-board which had to return and hence we couldn't visit those 2 places. The boat was maneuvered towards Tsunami Island.

Well, the name surely strikes a chord in our minds. Whats with the name Tsunami, is it in respect of people who were affected or just for attracting crowds? But the answer was, "When the Tsunami cyclone hit the Konkan belt in 2004, a huge mass of sand was deposited at a particular place, perhaps a backwater area was developed". This place is named after the cyclone and a lot of water sports activities were carried out on this particular island.

We played the following games and all of us had a blast there
  • Water Scooter
  • Bumpy Ride
  • Banana Ride
  • Jet Ski
  • Kayaking
Of all, Kayaking was a very cumbersome process. Besides all these activities we also played in water with our life jackets on. The star of the event was Adarsh, for he helped all to play in water and clicked some really awesome photographs of one and all. A truly calm and composed person with amazing photographic skills.

From Tsunami we moved to Deobaug beach where we had relishing lunch. You can see Deepak enjoying his meal here.

From Deobaug, we moved to Tarkarli Beach, the beach had paragliding (jeep assist) as an activity to perform. Half the group did and the other half didnt. I preferred to be in the other half. We played few games there too.

On our return from Tarkarli, we directly moved to the market. I bought a 5 liter can of Kokam Syrup  and various spices of the town. Also bought all sorts of cashews (salted, peppered, pepped up, etc). People had their own lists.

We returned to the resort after dinner for the last time and played till mid night.

Tuesday 25th December, 2012 -  As the clock struck 12.00 AM we were on the beach with Joyce, Lawrence and Joel centrestage in order to celebrate Christmas on its brink. Absolute fun. We sliced cakes and burst crackers too. Celebrations all over. Such a lovely start. We continued playing mafia and slept at 3AM after series of discussions.

Woke up at 8, We packed our luggage and prepared for exit post breakfast.

VijayDurg was the final destination. A fort built by the predecessors of Shivaji Maharaj and conquered by him later on. We reached there at 11AM. The fort was much well built than Sindhudurg. Well maintained as well. Huge fort at seaside. The guide was a newbie who had brought notes to explain. The major attraction of the fort was the Dolphins we saw from a distance. There were not one or two but many of them that moved in flocks.
The super major attraction was the jump of the dolphins. I couldnt believe that we saw untrained dolphins jumping for almost 4-5 times. This was a 'vasool' trip to the fort only because of the Jumping Dolphins

We had lunch at a restaurant near the fort and started our Journey back to Mumbai.

After hours and hours of travel and Mafia we reached Chiplun to have our dinner. We had dinner at 10ish and few of them were pukish :) That was the last stop..

Wednesday 26th December, 2012 - We reached Mumbai at dawn and were loaded with 1000s of memories.

The days passed by like wind and I wish to travel again with TMI for yet another experience of a lifetime. Kudos to all who made the trip a lovable one.

Regards,
Younus Poonawala
